A long way home...

So from the end of the world to sitting among far too many English
tourists... how did this happen?!
At some magical stage I thought it'd be a great idea to catch the
ferry back to UK, keep my feet on the ground, so to speak. A bit of
Internet research later, booked.
Little did I realise what a cascade effect this would have on the next
few days and my wallet!
Plane = €40 (€60 inc transfers)
Ferry = €60 (€170 inc transfers and the required 2 nights accomodation
at both ports, well done me!)

Sitting on the end of the world...

I'm at the end.
On the furthest most western point of Spain, I can in no further. I cannot help but be completly overwhelmed. Nobody could have told me when I first started this blog that this would be one of my final destinations.
Thinking of everyone at home and all those I'll miss in the UK. Thank you to all those who have dropped me well wishes over the last 18 months, each has been so important to me.
Now back to the UK by ferry hopefully and to catch up with Cass!

I MADE IT!

After 36 very long days of walking I´M HERE!
It´s an amazing sight, city and achievement and somehow it´s still not over for me...
While arriving here in Santiago has been almost all that I expected it to be I still don´t feel that I can rest till I get out to Fisterra, the most western point of Spain and the ocean. It´ll be another 3 days walk out there and obviously 3 back if I choose to trudge on back as well.

Almost there... (Ferriros - 13.5 outside Sarria)

Pictured is the 100km marker to Santiago. Yesterday also marked my 1 month in Spain walking the Camino.
I'm feeling fitter, stronger and healthier then I have my whole time in the UK. Not only my physical fitness but also mentally... maybe more ballenced?
Been walking with 3 others of late, interesting and amazing people in their own right. More on them later, as for now I'm off to bed.

The illicit photo... (Just outside Leon)

Just a quick update despite the huge amount of stories I have to tell. A quick not to say I´m alive and well (which is a nice change). Recently had a few days off sick. Erk! Some have been saying that it´s bad water from a specific town, others say it´s your stomach getting used to Spanish water but heaps of people have been getting a 24 hours bug causing all sorts of nasty exits from the body. Fortunatly it is just that, a 24 hours bug and most people are back on the road after a day of rest. I think for the first time I slept from 12pm through to 8am the next morning. It did teach me to slow down a tad and now I´m doing a few less kilometers per day and enjoying my time more.
Leon was great, if not a little overwhelming after so many little towns.

Oh GOD! I proudly passed a McDonalds despite the fact I was starving and nothing else was open due to siesta... but several hours later after still no food found myself wandering in that direction again... Nooooo why did I do it!! It was sooo good, I felt dirty and wrong at the same time... ewww!

Still looking for something to do after camino with Cassy... looks like WWOOFing is back on the cards, possibly Italy! How cool!

Now to the illicit photo. There´s a church (insert name here) in Leon with 11th century paintings on the walls. Your really not suppose to take photos of it, I think heaps of people don´t turn off the their flash and it degrades the painting... though I managed to sneak one in... managed to get caught too... hehe... "I don´t speak Spanish" phrase has never come in more handy!

Half way... WOOHOO (Traveling through: Calzadilla de la Cueza)

Ouch... I'm on the Camino, writing and walking at the same time (not the easiest of feats). After absolutely marching about 17km in around 3 hours, I'm bloody sore.
I woke up this morning in familar territory surprisingly enough. I stayed in Carrion de los Condes, the very same town that holds the San Zoilo Monastery, where I participated in the VaughanTown program! It was great to know a bit of my surroundings for a moment.
Anyhow, as you might have guessed from the title of the post I'm about half way to Santiago! Woohoo again! 387km down, 387km left to go!!!

Long lost faces... (Belorado)

Staying in Belorado tonight (I´ll try and post the name of the city I´m staying into the title, like this one)

Woah there have been some long days. Another 10 hours day of walking again the other day. Such a relentless pursuit from everyone involved.

It´s quite curious when your walking all alone for hours on end all day the random thoughts that pop into your head. So many faces and moments in time come flashing back all of a sudden. Most specifically old friends from work/school/collage. Even old pets and animals I´ve owned in the past.

I´ve walked 236km so far and *only* have 542 to go to get to Santiago de Compostela but I also want to walk to the coast of Spain, Finisterre and back to Santiago again which should take a few extra days/kms!

Still looking for something extra to do once I´m done walking as I´ll have about 2 - 3 weeks left to do something in Europe before I head home. Hopefully me and Cass will be able to hook up somewhere in Europe.

P.S. Thank you soooo much Cass for your guide book on the Camino... would have lost my way 100 times already and know half as much as what I currently do about the cities Í´ve stayed in.

Egg-plosion...

(Picture: Photo for mumsey... Spanish Sasha)

The days seem so full despite their mundane appearance on a map. Between talking, eating resting, planning, washing, laughing, sight seeing, breathing, dodging European traffic, thinking, drinking and walking... there isn't much time for anything else. I have about 20 of my favorite music albums on my PSP, I've so far listened to half of one!
It's amazing meeting so many different people, each with their own stories and lives. One of the things I dislike about huge cities is the rush of people, each one being capable of writing detailed and interesting book on their lives, a rush of information and a disregard for any of it. On Camino, everyone is flowing in the same direction. Similar goals being achieved in similar ways but unique ways. You join and leave people and groups as they flow around you, picking out the stories that are interesting and something you can learn and share with. An amazing experience!
Oh, and a mental note to self. Don't put peeled, hard-boiled eggs into the microwave. They'll explode, not in the microwave but on the table some time later with a 360 degree, 2 meter radius! LMAO!!

Camino de Santiago - Map

Anyone wanting to follow me as I go... here´s a map. Click it to get a larger image!

Mini running of the bulls...

Wow, what a day! If this is a taste of things to come then bring it on! There's hardly been a dull moment. This morning the intention was to walk to Pamplona, easy enough walk, only 20 km along reasonably easy terrain. Simple day...
I'd been walking all the way with Dawn, who'd up untill today, really needed my encouragement. Today though she was really powering on and I decided that it was time to walk alone for a while and focus on why I was walking myself. So I left Dawn and essentially started my own camino today. After a few km by myself in which I passed a few small groups with new found speed, I'd stopped just before a suburb of Pampalona called 'Trinidad de Arre'. Stopping just long enough meet some of said small groups again and promply getting invited for early afternoon coffee, which I keenly accepted!
Moments on entering the town we see boarded up doors and windows and nobody around (siesta time, fair call on the nobody around part). Soon after, in a bar we all find out that today is the towns festival, which includes a mini running of the bulls. Hence the reason the main street is boarded up! Woohoo!
Canceled are all plans for Pampalona today! What an amazing sight. Such strong animals, such brave, borderline stupid men on one small street!
The rest of the evening was spent with very cool randoms in the refugio talking in sooo many languages, some people translating for others, everyone adding in but primarily 'hands & feet' language. Hehe!
What's tomorrow got organised?

A long road to Roncesvalles...

Holy crap!
That was the longest, most physically draining day of my life. I don't believe that I'll ever be able to say 'I can't' ever again. So much is happening I cannot even mention it all, I'm so tired I fell asleep trying to blog a message and I'm ready to do the same tonight! Good train trip down to Saint Jean Pied de Port. One train almost missed the only connection, stressful! I met 2 ladies, Dawn and Helen who were training in Australia together. Dawn walked with me today and we helped each other through a huge day.
Saint Jean is called one me the most ambitious starting points for the Camino, 1.3km incline over 25km, the hardest day on Camino. Pain!
I must sleep or I'll die! I hope everyone is well at home, UK and Oz! Love you all!

To Spain and back again... (+ 750km)

Photo: It's only a short trip all over Europe Cass!

Holy crap... my time has finally arrived and all in what seems to be a blink of an eye!
Tomorrow is my last day at Virgin Megastore, Brighton then I have 2 days to get myself organised (Hahaha ha haha ha). On Wednesday morning, early, I'm off to Luton airport via 2 busses, a quick flight over to Paris, arriving in the early evening. 2 nights stay in Paris in a hostel and an early train ride to 'Saint Jean Pied de Port' where I'm still not sure where I'll be staying, presumably a pilgrims hostel.

More news coming soon...

Saturday, September 8

It's official, I suck at posting... and I'M COMING HOME!!!

Pictured: Brighton by the eve... I'm actually going to really miss it!

Well the date has been set... 2nd of December! Yep, that's the day my flight from Heathrow, London gets into Sydney, Australia.
There's quite a bit of time between now and then though but I have plenty of things planned between.
I'll be finishing up a Virgin here in Brighton at the end of the month and then flying over to Paris to start a very long trek, yes I'm going ahead with plans to walk the Camino de Santiago. I so far managed to organise walking shoes (friggin' expensive), flights and few other bits and bobs... though generally unorganised, as per usual!

In other random news I moved house again and I'm staying with friend and workmate, John till I head off to Paris / Spain. His a super star and has saved me millions to help out traveling. Also my sis is flying off from London on the 18th to begin her winter round Europe tour which fits in perfectly for me as I'm headed that direction to see Kosheen that very day anyhow! WOOHOO!

Not sure what's next after I finish on the camino but I'm thinking of heading to Ibiza just to visit 'Cafe del Mar', the home of some of the best chill out music in the world, that and it's been a long time dream to visit! After that? France, Italy, Greece......?

P.S. I've updated my little countdown thingo to reflect my new date to arrive home... 84 days and counting...

Tuesday, July 10

Oh Dear God...

Well I've just spent 2 amazing days in London. I traveled up
specifically to see "Oi Va Voi" live on their only UK tour date and,
to top it off, the launch of their new album. Originally refered to me
by a darling Internet friend, Claudia! We have such similar music
tastes it's almost freaky, down to the same songs on albums. That's
doing well considering my 'odd' music tastes.
It was amazing and so much more then I was expecting. Such wonderfully
crafted and balanced music and the visual show to match, I was in
heaven!
The trip itself was great too... £4.50 return coach, a £15 hostel for
the night, all my maps and details put onto the Nintendo DS along with
heaps of music for the coach. Well planned and stress free, has me
wondering why I'd ever spent a weekend at home!
In other random news my K800i mobile has started working again??
Figures seeings how I just went out and bought a new 'cheapie' phone
from work to cover me. Grrrr again at my mobile! Also my laptop power
adapter that died in Spain, that started working again has now resumed
dying, again!
My future is upon me now... that August deadline for the end of my
working time here in the UK is bearing down very fast...

Monday, July 2

Easy lungs, fractured 'air time' & portable browsing...

Right... I'd promised myseld I'd get an eary night tonight but here I
am at 11:45pm in a pub sending emails... where did I go wrong?

Anyhow, a big yahoo and sigh of relief to the new no smoking ban that
went into effect as of yesterday here in the UK! It's certainly making
my late night email far more plesent to write.
My mobile phone... still fucked! NOT HAPPY, JAN! (I had to explain
that quote to an Englishman recently, doesn't have the same effect. So
anyhow... sorry to all those that I normally call (not many, sorry
again)!
And now on to the latest purchase, a new Nintendo DS. I've been
thinking recently about all the items that I have to sell so I can
continue to travel (basically verything that doesn't go on my back)
and this means things like PS3, bike & it's looking very likely that
includes my laptop too! So after some research, one thing leads to
another and I have myself a new DS. Oh well... if this email works
it'll mean that I can use it to blog....

Reduced to an Internet cafe... Ewww...

(Pictured: Travel buddies... (L to R) Hayley, Svina & Beatriz)

Well my trip to southern Spain was bloody amazing. The abuse of Lady Luck was shocking yet highly successful. I traveled with 2 awesome chicks that I met in Vaughantown, Beatriz and Svina! I love them both and I'm missing them already.

Granada and Sevilla were both so amazing, I thought I was in love with Spain when I was in Madrid, now Madird looks really average in comparison! Granada specifically just blew me away... I'm left wondering how quickly I could:
  • Learn Spanish
  • Sell all my belongings here in the UK
  • Find a place to live in Granada
  • and find a place to work
We all traveled overnight on a bus booked at last minute from Madrid to Granada. Arriving very early we made for a hostel that "might" have room for us. We eventually found the hostel after weaving through Granadas "car unfriendly" streets and found ourselves sat in the reception for about hour, sleepy and weary from a overnight bus nap, not knowing if we'd get accommodation or not. Eventually we scored a spot in the amazing hostel and decided to head up to the Alhambra... the most amazing place I've ever seen in my life! After spending sooo many sunburnt hours there we headed back to the hostel for siesta... sooo nice to nap in the middle of a hot day. We then spent the evening sloothing around the ancient marble paved streets for local tapas and anything else of interest.
Then catching an early bus from Granada we headed to Sevilla... arriving in the early afternoon to open Californian styled, palm tree laden streets and warm sun. Yum!
This time we had slightly organised our next hostel, lesson learned! Once checked in we headed over to the Seville Cathedral... my words will never adequately describe the enormity and just how overwhelming this building just is. Again we headed back to our hostel for an afternoon siesta, yum again, in the evening we wandered round the river looking for somewhere to eat. Was such a cool/warm evening and we managed to find an awesome place right on the river that could be best described to an Australian as a Cuban styled open kitchen, complete with the "Big Mumma" sitting and running the place. Then while wandering home we came across an open stret bar and Beatriz suggests "Mojios" all round! So this very fun and talented bar man knocks up this awesome drink in front of us.... there goes the early night I had planned...

Woke up early the next morning, said good bye to the girls and headed off to the bus station. So 2 buses and a flight I make it home about 11pm that night.

Now to sort out 2 weeks of a neglected life back here in the UK... sooo much dirty washing & a broken phone and now laptop... GRRR!

Yet another Vaughantown... hardly complaining!

(Pictured: The Avila Wall)

Well here I am, yet again in Spain. I've just spent 1 more week in Avila, Spain. Yet another Vaughantown! No more holidays from work this time, I've come over without being paid at work but it's defiantly worth it. I was able to see the same 5 students through their last program, which was great!

I made sure that I have some extra time to look around Spain this time. I've hooked up with 2 of the English speakers to head down to Granada and Sevilla to check them out on, what's sure to be a whirlwind tour of both.

I'll be arriving back late on the 27th which will give me 3 days to chill before I'm due back at work at the start of the month! Ewww! Assimilation won't be so easy this time...

My phone is almost completely dead... and not in the 'carge the battery' kinda way. Not happy, Jan! I forget just how much I rely on technology sometimes. It's my calender, camera, MP3 player / ear plugs , notepad and of course, PHONE!

I got to see my sister for my birthday too. That was unexpected and great value to have her around! I tried to keep my birthday a non-event... almost worked except Virgin found out. They gave my a card which everyone from work had signed, was sweet and hardly expected!

Be sure to check out my Flickr photos as I'm trying to post the best of them there! Though this is difficult with my phone/camera on the fritz! Grrrr!

Plans, plans, plans...

Just a quick update to let people know that I've changed mobile numbers. The new number is +447748791586.
Been trying to plan the next part of my trip... I've organised some more time in Spain not just for another Vaughantown but a few extra days to really see the place!
I'm also looking into making a really long communion via, as the Spanish know it, "el Camino de Santiago" aka "The Way of St. James" in English. Read more from the link until I have more time to explain......

1 year down...

(Pictured: My lil' sis, Cassy at Vaughantown in Spain)

1 year this Saturday the 19th of May, that's the day that I've been in this country... for 1 year of my life.

1 year on and how do I feel? Well at the moment, utter shit, but that's another story! Perhaps focusing on positives would be a good idea!

I've seen and done so much over the last year! Meeting so many different people and affecting all of them in so many ways. I've discovered so much of myself but possibly only found more of myself in the process.
The main thoughts occupying my brain are "next year". It's such a huge amount of possibilities and unknown.

I hate anniversaries of any sort! Anyone who knows me well enough knows that I hate my birthday, Christmas and such... so much emotion and people all at once always unsettles me.
