Independence a-hoy!

(Pictured: Wind turbines nr. Truro - Awesome sight to see. I really do want to get under one of them. So fun!)

Okay, I'm here today sitting in a bar in Truro (capitol of Cornwall), drinking a terrible cappuccino because I feel guilty for chewing up their wi-fi to access the internet but it's worth it because they have Royksopp's albums playing in the background! Fancy that, a pub playing electronic music! That wouldn't happen at home!
Speaking of music I have got the "Mylo" and "Goldfrapp" lined up to go see! I never dreamed of being able to see these bands live, wasn't even within comprehension!

I'm attempting to maintain some form of independence and good health, this has worked out to mean long bike rides into the bigger towns around the area. I managed to ride 15 miles (24 kilometres) into Newquay attempting to stave off the "Heathrow Injection", description as follows courteous of the YHA website:

This is a very real and very stressful condition experienced by Australians once in London. Effects are literally noticed over night and no warning is given. Put simply, it is the injection of fat on arrival at Heathrow airport; however, this fat does not surface until anywhere from one week to one month after arrival. It tends to affect females the worst with an overall expansion of the body while males experience a concentrated expansion in the stomach area, commonly know as a beer belly!

There is no doubt that moving half way across the world into another hemisphere is bound to affect you - the food, water and air are all different. Also you are many miles away from home and a binge on ice cream, chocolate or alcohol to help lift your sprits at times is necessary.

Doing this bus trip to Truro is making me feel a little more independent and I get to go shopping to buy things that aren't in the Padstow area like CD-Rs and S-video cables (yep, still a nerd)!
Despite being a nerd I have managed to delete all my data on my laptop by attempting to resize partitions an the hard disk, I swear it wasn't my fault, the program I was using had an error. All my data gone in a blink of an eye. I recovered 99% of it after several hours of work (some family members would know what I'm like if my computer isn't functioning).

I did yet a little excited today when I saw in emu today on the bus trip down here. Managing to meet plenty of new wildlife though! For example we have our backyard badger where I'm staying. Hehe!

Quite odd how the roads are named over here, all coded opposed to named. But yet roundabouts have names, handy for a reference point I spose.

Well now I'm on the bus trip back home but theres been an accident up ahead. I don't think people have been hurt... going to be late for work now. It's going quite well I think, getting to know everyone slowly. I still manage to underestimate people! I pass people by at work not thinking much of them initially only later on to find out they are really quite interesting people! A lesson to be learnt there no doubt!

I'm writing this all in using the tablets handwriting recognition. It's not bad considering my handwriting is so sloppy , though it has major issues with the why I write my "p", keeps thinking they are "q's"! It's really quite difficult to change ones writing style!

Clearly I'm not getting much time to keep this blog up to date because I seem to have heaps to write. Sorry to all that waiting on post cards and phone calls, time in the day just seems to fly!

Okay running low on battery and shit to crap on with so I'm going! Ciao!

Pfft... it was *only* Elton John!

So there was a recent visit to Taunton to visit Sir Elton John I should probably write about, yeah?
Well intentionally not going into detail, Sam has extended contacts linking directly to Elton John. This leaves myself, Sam and two of her friends with 4 corporate tickets and 2 VIP backstage passes to Elton's latest concert!
No defiantly not my usual music tastes but how can you knock back tickets like that?!
It was amazing to be involved in the atmosphere. The whole prorduction was huge, like I've never seen before. Lighting, sound, set up and staffing were huge and must have been a mamoth task to put together!
Me and Sam managed to get backstage into the green room. We met Davey Johnstone, his current guitarist, Nigel Olsson, his original drummer and John Mahon his percussionist. We even herd Elton practicing vocal before the performance.
I felt guilty during most the performance knowing that there would be people who'd kill to be where I was.

I think I finally had the first bout of homesickness. The whole lump in throat and thinking of all the friends and family I can't see. Erk.

Now this will make everyone at SeaChange Cafe jealous! The latest gig I went to was Fat Freddie's Drop in Newquay! A 7 piece New Zealand dub band. Again not my usual music tastes but Vinnie at SeaChange insisted on playing their album at least once a day. Bloody amazing album but mind blowing live! Very few bands could get so many young people movin' and singing with a trumpet, saxophone and trombone!

Super nerd (and proud of it)!

So at the moment I'm using an Acer C310 Tablet PC and connecting to the internet via my w800i mobiles GPRS USB modem, laymens terms using my mobile to access the Internet on my laptop. As nerdy as that is I still managed to forget to change my address on my PayPal account for eBay and now the account is locked and I've no way of paying for the laptop I'm using. Haha! I have to fax an American number with government documents to get it working again... pain in the arse! Thanks PayPal!

So work, yeah? Well it's a pleasent restaurant, full table service (just shy of full sliver service), 150 covers max, amazing food and typical shocking English service. At least there's plenty of room for improvement and gives me something to do! It's not bad and I'm picking up a few new skills while learning "the English way" and offending people (unintentionally) as I go! Re: Management/Supervisor ideas in last post: doubt I'd want the responsibility at the moment or the stress for that matter! Hehe!

Finally getting out a little and meeting people with has oddly been missed. Slowing getting a little more fit and should be able to ride my bike a fair distance soon!

I've got the following bands lined up to go see in the near future! Fat Freddies Drop, Imogen Heap, Goldfrapp & even Elton John! Through a few connections I've managed to score tickets to go see Elton John with Sam, far from my usual music tastes indeed but I'd be stupid not to go!

8:15am - Well to start the morning I headed out with Sam to St Austell as I needed a black shirt for work and wanted to look around the town and Sam was heading that direction anyway as she had an understudy job for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
11:10am - Managed to find a bargain black shirt for £9 that was really good. The town is really pretty!
1:15pm - Lunch with Sam. Cost well over $20 for a BLT, chips and Coke! Geezz! Legs getting a little sore... walking around town non-stop.
3:05pm - Next was the train and bus ride back to Padstow. The first time I'd been on the local buses.
3:35pm - Of course it had to be late and I was already cutting it fine with the time I had to get back home.
4:40pm - And of course again the Royal Cornwall Show had to be on and the bus got held up in traffic more so.
4:50pm - So finally in Padstow where I'd planned to pickup a bike to ride the 5 miles back to St Merryn (where Sam's grandparents are aka home) in time to work at 6pm!
4:55pm - £100 later I have a great second hand bike from a friend of a friend of Sams who works in a bike hire shop. I now owe the guy some computer work I think!
5:30pm - Home! I'm going to die! Sweat dripping off me everywhere. Stopped in for a shower and had to make a last minute bid on a eBay tablet laptop I'd been watching.
5:58pm - Arrive in usual fassion to work, just in time! Dripping with sweat again mind you after another 1.5 mile ride!
11:20pm - Finish work and win Acer Travelmate C110 Tablet PC eBay auction. Work was great. More details on it later. Possibly dreaming but maybe pratical to manage or at least supervise it in the near future! Nice!
2:40am - Writing this damn blog. Legs are killing from over use!
2:41am - ZZZzzz...

Notable changes continued...

Well oddly enough I've managed to score myself a job today. Sam's cafe hasn't been busy enough to need me (hopefully that's just till the summer season starts) so I went on the hunt for a job today.
So I set out on foot to a golf club that I was told was reasonable and is only a few miles away. It would have had to of been the easiest job I've ever gotten! Desperate for people I'd say!
So tomorrow I'm off to buy a few black shirts and a bike... it'll save walking those few miles every day.

So some more notable changes:

  • Seagulls are huge monsters here! The ones at home are cute and cuddly in comparison and they can be bastards at times let alone if they were 2x the size!
  • KFC replaces mashed potato and gravey with baked beans apparently. What's the go with that? It's one of the few reasons I'd go to KFC... that and when I'm hung over and can't think straight not to do so.
  • Dogs are allowed everywhere! Finally equal rights for dogs. Public transport, pubs and parks.
  • There are wind turbines everywhere in Cornwall. Good to see some countries are taking renewable energy a little more seriously!
  • I sware it's brighter here too. I'm finding that I have to ware my sunnies far more often then normal.
  • It's no longer a "Devonshire Tea" it's a "Cream Tea", obvious but still amusing!
